Miscellaneous shell scripts

Here are some shell scripts for Linux. For more details, see the comments at the start of each script.

• runplanet: This runs the planet and lunsol programs and outputs a string which can be fed to the "-a" option of the starmap program. So it is a convenient way to show the moon, sun, and planets on a star map. Note that this script uses planet and lunsol. Here is an example of how to run it:

  map -m Saturn -a $(runplanet -d 9/1/2015)
  

• zenith: This prints the right ascension and declination of the zenith, and its output can be fed to the "-z" option of the starmap program, which draws the horizon. Note that this script uses celcoo. Here is an example of how to run it:

  map -m 1,0 -z $(zenith -d 9/1/2015 -t 22:00)
  

• makeadd: This command is given a file which must consist of lines from the "Minor Planet & Comet Ephemeris Service" web site. It produces a string which can be fed to the "-a" option of the starmap program. Here is an example of how to run it:

  map -m 14h10,-9,8 -l 9 -s 9 -a "$(makeadd -n Ceres -d -s ceres)"
  

  This assumes you have a file called "ceres", containing, for example:

• riseset: This prints the time that the sun or one of the planets rises and sets. It finds it by calling planet repeatedly. Note that this script uses planet. Here is an example of how to run it:

  riseset Sat -d 9/1/2015
